Westhoff Motorsports Teams with Can Do Motorsports to Capture 2nd Place at SCORE Baja 250 March 15 , 2007 – Joey Westhoff teamed with Can Do Motorsports owner, Chris Bowman, this past weekend for the second race of the 2007 SCORE Desert Series as they headed to Baja, California for the SCORE Baja 250. Joey and Johnny started third off the line and only minutes into the race lost all radio communications. Joey charged hard through the baja desert determined to hand the car over to Chris in the lead. Since the racecar lost all radio communications Chris was waiting anxiously at Valley de Trinidad with no word of what was going on in the first half of the race. While Chris was pacing the pits, Joey was battling through the field of cars making his way to the front. At RM 55 Joey had picked his way through the pack and sighted the dust of Michelle Bruckman, who was first off the line in Ensenada earlier that morning. Behind the wheel of the #501 Michelle tried to pull away but the Can Do Motorsports #503 took the lead. With only 65 miles to go until the driver change at Valley De Trinidad Joey just wanted to stay in front and pass the car to Chris without any problems. Coming into the driver change Joey had a 13 minute lead on the next Class 5 car. Joey immediately jumped out of the car and let Chris know that the voltage was only at 10 volts. The batteries weren't charging and they their only chance was that the car would make it to the next remote pit at Erindera where they had an extra battery.
Only seconds before Chris was about to take off they noticed that the thru rod nuts were gone, everyone scattered around trying to find a spare nut but they weren't successful. Joey ended up putting a makeshift bolt with some tie wire and a hose clamp to get the job done. While the crew was working on fixing the thru rod, the #505 got by, taking the lead. A few minutes later Chris was back on course and ready to make up some time. Chris made his pass before he got to Erindera and pulled into the pit to let the crew check everything over. Unfortunately the thru rod nuts were gone again and the #505 passed him while he was in the pits. Thanks to the fast pit and spare parts Chris was able to pull out with only particles of dust between them.
Chris battled with #505 until only miles from the finish where they lost all power, and had to coast down the hill to the finishline only 5 minutes behind the #505 of Luivan Voelker. Chris Bowman and Joey Westhoff captured second place at both the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and this past weekend at the SCORE Baja 250 putting them in the lead for the points race heading into the SCORE Baja 500. Many thanks goes out to all of our sponsors that make our racing efforts possible; we hope you can make it out this weekend for the MORE Balls Out 250 where Weshoff Motorsports will take their 1-2/1600 through the Barstow desert. Joey Westhoff will be strapped into his 5-point Mastercraft 3G and behind the wheel for the entire 250 miles with his co driver Josh Westhoff leading him through the dust.
