OCTOBER 13, 2008 - Westhoff Motorsports returned to the Barstow desert for the Third Annual MORE Powder Puff Race for the CURE on October 11, 2008. The two previous years Westhoff Motorsports’ Brittany Sanchez got behind the wheel for the fundraising event in hopes to help find a CURE for Breast Cancer and this year wouldn’t be any different.
The inaugural event two years ago proved to be a hit amongst the off road racing community as the race raised $62,000 to be donated to the Cedar Sinai Breast Cancer Research Institution followed by $60,000 donated in 2007. This year MORE and the entire racing community came together and raised $98,263 to date.
Westhoff Motorsports’ driver Brittany Sanchez and co-driver Katie O’Shea belted into their MasterCraft 3G’s, buckled their helmets and took off behind 11 other 1-2/1600’s. By RM 11 they had made their way up to the front of the pack and only had a few cars in front of them. Unfortunately 8 miles later the two had a repeat of last years’ race and rolled the racecar. The two weren’t as lucky as the previous year and didn’t land on their wheels but had to wait for their crew to come and roll them back over.
With only some minor cosmetic damage the two were able to get back on the course , but over 25 minutes down from the leaders. Despite the heartbreaker Brittany and Katie got back into the racecar and fought their way towards the front. Without radio communications, due to the rollover, the duo had no idea that they had made their way back to the top and were running with the leaders. They came into the finish only two minutes shy of going out on other lap, which would have given them a chance to give the leaders a run for their money.
“Although we rolled we had a great time and that’s what we came out here for. We still made it into the top five which is great and we can’t wait for the next one,” commented Brittany, “We couldn’t have done it without the help of our entire team. We lost our radio and couldn’t tell them where we rolled and they found us in no time.”
